What I plan to read aloud to my daughters in 2026

There’s nothing I love more than making a list of books to read aloud with my daughters. If you would like a printable copy of this read aloud list, simply enter your email address below and it will arrive straight to your inbox!

One of my favorite things to do as a parent is to read aloud to my children at night before bed.

We have so many fun shared memories from the books we read together and I love this simple way to calm everyone down at the end of the evening.

Last year we dedicated the majority of our read alouds to the Little House on the Prairie series which my younger daughters didn’t remember at all and it was a pleasure to read them cover to cover.

This year, as usual, I am making a list of books that I hope to read aloud to my four children this year.

Here are the books I hope to read:

National Park Mystery SeriesNational Park Mystery Series

Mystery in Rocky Mountain National Park by Aaron Johnson
Several families in our neighborhood were delighted with this series and we bought it for Tally for Christmas (when I mentioned it on Instagram, I got a whole other flood of messages from people saying how much they and their kids loved it). I think it will be fun to read the first one together!

The Rover Story by Jasmine Warga
When I asked for books for children who liked The wild robotthis one has come up a million times and I’ve never read it! And since I read and loved The MartianI have a passing interest in Mars!

The Umbrella Mouse by Anna Fargher
I love some historical fiction in our read alouds and this one has great reviews and is set during WWII but features animals more than most. I think this one will be a success.

No purchase necessary by Maria Marianayagam
These are a book club pick for 2026 and I often enjoy reading them aloud to my kids during the summer. This one is about a boy who is peer pressured to steal a candy bar, and then, when the boy who told him to do it, rejects it, he opens it to discover that it is a million dollar winning candy bar.

What a witchWhat a witch

Which witch? by Eva Ibbotson
I had planned to read it aloud during our October/Halloween reading for the past few years, but time ran out, so I’m hoping we can do it this year! The reviews on this one are great and it looks so fun and funny, which I love in a Halloween book (legitimate horror is NOT for me).

The Christmas Paper Bag by Kevin Alan Milne
I’m always looking for new Christmas chapters to read to my kids in December and I’m excited about this one in which two brothers volunteer at a children’s hospital over the holidays and discover that the true magic of Christmas comes from compassion and connection – especially through a brave little girl who helps them see the season in a whole new way.
