I forget things. Do I have dementia? An expert weighs

Question: I start to forget the normal words during the daily conversation, and I am only 55 years old. Do I lose it? Or is it normal? My children think I have dementia. They can joke, but I am secretly worried. Should I be?

Laurie Archbald-Pannone, MD

This question reflects a very common concern. Many of us have reached the average age and are starting to notice changes. Our joints hurt me, our energy levels plunge and we take an additional remark when we leave our credit card at home or forget the name of a friend’s cat. To a certain extent, we are aware that aging will occur. But we do not always know what is normal wear and tear compared to a sign of serious illness.

So, we wonder: is this forgetfulness a sign of aging or the beginning of dementia?

Our expert geriatrician, Laurie Archbald-Pannone, MD, breaks down what is normal and what is not.

Normal: no signs of dementia

You may feel like losing it, but many factors – health, sleep, stress – can have an impact on your memory.

Forget

Can’t find the right word for something? Have you left the kettle to boil? Wore a light sweater by a cold night? You might feel embarrassed, but these are all examples of memory changes with the aging we expect. As we are getting older, it can take more time from our “recall memory” to get into play. It is planned if on an occasion, we forget the name of an acquaintance. Or if you speak to a friend of a famous singer, but the name does not roll you about the language.

Lose things

Even regularly equaling your glasses or car keys does not mean that you are on the dementia path. The fog of the brain that slows you down or makes multitasking difficult – this can happen for many reasons – most of which are not dementia.

Not normal: signs of early dementia

Here are signs that could be associated with dementia and that you would like to be checked by a health professional.

Confusion in familiar places

If you feel really disoriented, confused and lost in familiar contexts, like your workplace or your living room, it could be a sign of something serious.

Forget

There is a difference between the types of forgetfulness. If you forget the name of a neighbor’s dog, it’s different than not knowing the word for “dog”. Talking with your supplier if you or someone close to you is no longer able to recognize the numbers or make a simple addition.

Yes, you can prevent dementia

Here is a guide to keep your brain healthy.

Memory has fun in the moment

To forget to serve a meal that you have just prepared could be a sign of changes beyond what we expect with aging. Although the sickly elements can be in normal aging changes, loss of the capacity to trace your steps can point out that you should see your doctor.

Mood swings

Sudden changes, great changes in mood or personality or to receive newly from the activities we have previously enjoyed, could also be a sign of dementia. But this might also be signs of depression or delirium, so these are certainly symptoms that you should discuss with a supplier.
